Step up your cheer game with private lessons as you prepare for tryouts! Private lessons are the fastest way to improve on technique, but there are a few, very simple guidelines you can follow to get the most out of your next session.
Know the Team Requirements
Does your high school cheer team require a standing back handspring? Are you expected to know more than one position in stunting? How many jumps do you need to connect?
Decide on Specific Goals
Once you have hired a coach, make sure you are on the same page about what you hope to accomplish and in what timeframe. At the end of each lesson, try to connect with your coach briefly to check in and see how it went.
Understand the Price
You typically get what you pay for, and private lessons can cost between $35-$90 an hour. If you consider what you’re getting, it’s one-on-one attention teaching and/or fixing specific skills, details, dance or problem areas which are invaluable. The most important aspect is whether or not your athlete can retain, generalize and reuse the information provided in each lesson.
Be Prepared for a Workout
Private lessons should be continuous hard work since they are 30-60 minutes of a non-stop workout for one athlete. It consists of drills, hands-on coaching, conditioning, and repetition. If you have hired a coach that you trust, allow him or her to do the job you are paying for and carry out the lesson plan they’ve prepared for your athlete.
Give Notice if a No-Show
Coaches will often book lessons back-to-back, and when a client doesn’t show up and doesn’t call, that slot becomes empty when it could have been filled if the coach had simply known beforehand. Send a text or call at least 24 hours in advance, as a courtesy.
Ask for Package Pricing
Since private lessons are more expensive than classes, often times the best way to go is a package deal. Coaches tend to give a better price if you purchase a set of four or eight at a time.
Consider Your Timeframe
Don’t wait until the last minute to begin private lessons because the nature of tumbling, jumping, and stunting is impossible to learn in a short amount of time. Confidence, true body awareness, and good technique take time and repetition, so taking private lessons a couple weeks before tryouts is unrealistic.
